G8 still sees significant risks for world economy
G8 leaders believe the world economy still faces "significant risks" and may need further help, according to the conclusions of a summit which took place yesterday (8 July) in L'Aquila, Italy.
Final documents cautioned that "significant risks remain to economic and financial stability" while "exit strategies" from pro-growth packages should be unwound only "once recovery is assured".
"Before there is talk of additional stimulus, I would urge all leaders to focus first on making sure the stimulus that has been announced actually gets delivered," Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said.

The first session of the new European Parliament in Strasbourg has been dominated by two issues: the election of Jerzy Buzek as its president and the arrival of the first far right MEPs from the UK.
Jerzy Buzek is the living embodiment of what many people think the European Union is all about.
He was born in Poland, in a border region which changed hands between Czechoslovakia, Poland and Germany in the chaos of World War II.
He ended the war living and working in communist Poland - a regime that he eventually helped to bring down as a member of the anti-bureaucratic trade union Solidarity.

A senior Tory MEP has had the whip withdrawn after defying orders on the party's first day of work with its new "anti-federalist" group.
Edward McMillan-Scott, who used to lead the Tory MEPs group, decided to stand as a vice president in Strasbourg.
But the Tories have joined a new group in the European Parliament, whose official candidate was a Polish MEP.
Mr McMillan-Scott, who opposed the Tory decision to leave the main centre-right EPP group, was successful in his bid.

Sweden has urged the EU to "pool efforts and show leadership" to secure a global deal to curb climate change.
Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt was briefing the European Parliament on his country's priorities as the new holder of the six-month EU presidency.
"I want to write the story of how the climate threat was averted, together with you," he told newly-elected MEPs.
Sweden wants an EU deal on green measures ahead of a key UN conference on climate change in December.
The Copenhagen conference is already shaping Sweden's priorities.
