Record rise in UK jobless total
UK unemployment rose by a record 281,000 to 2.38 million in the three months to May, the Office for National Statistics has said.
The jobless rate increased to 7.6%, the highest in more than 10 years.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefit increased by 23,800 in June to 1.56 million, which was less than analysts had forecast.
Unemployment among young people has been especially acute, as firms cut jobs to reduce costs in the downturn.

China's foreign exchange reserves, the world's largest, have surpassed $2 trillion (£1.2tn), the country's central bank has said.
Currency reserves rose 17.8% from June 2008 to a record $2.13tn. Its currency stockpile is twice the size of Japan's - the second-biggest holder.

The People's Bank of China buys many of the dollars entering China to prevent its exchange rate from increasing.

"We're not actually printing money," insists Charlie Bean, the deputy governor of the Bank of England, leaning gently into the microphone.
It might be early on a Monday morning in a local radio studio, but the push to explain the policy of quantitative easing (QE) to the public has already started.
Mr Bean is in Leeds on the first leg of a tour of the UK, attempting to explain what the Bank calls its "conventional unconventional" measure to counter the recession.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Technology stocks were expected to lift the overall market at Wednesday's open after Intel topped analysts' expectations for the prior quarter and gave a positive second-half outlook.
At 7:12 a.m. ET, futures for the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq-100 were higher, with the Nasdaq futures up by about 1.8%.
